What does City Council do? Similar to Congress at the federal level, City Council is New York City’s legislative body. The Council is separate from the Mayor’s administration but an equal partner in how our City is run. City Council:

  • Introduce and vote on legislation (proposed laws) having to do with all aspects of City life.

  • Negotiate the City’s budget with the Mayor and approve its adoption.

  • Monitor City agencies such as the Department of Education and the NYPD to make sure they’re effectively serving New Yorkers.

  • Review land use and make decisions about the growth and development of our city. Introduce and vote on legislation (proposed laws) having to do with all aspects of City life.

“I believe in “People Power”, we can shape our communities with us & by us. That means placing people in power that will keep their ear to the ground, make decisions with us that will impact our daily lives, that will engage us, invest in our communities, groups, organizations, bring resources that promote equity, rebuild our future so we can live in dignity, house the homeless, nurture our Young, protect our seniors, land and open space. It’s your voice. Your vote.”

Who did District Leader Shaquana Boykin Endorse?

I have lived in City Council District 35 my entire life, I have seen the transformation. When the next City Councilperson wins, I want to help our City Councilperson and if I endorse the candidate that doesn’t win I will risk our relationship we need to work together. I welcome whoever wins. I will not endorse in District 35 City Council Race here is why.

  • District Leaders are the pulse of our community and I can sway the vote by endorsing not giving others a fair chance

  • City Council seat is open

  • All new candidates

  • All new approaches to City Council - Let’s hear them out without me swaying the vote
